J. Rae uses a combination of semi-precious stones, glass and unexpected materials such as wood to make her unique and eye catching pieces. Read on to find out more about the designer and her collection.
1. Why did you decide to start jewelry design?
I have always been a creative person...my mother is an artist so I was always inspired to draw when I was little. In high school I was obsessed with "scrunchie" making, and was introduced to photography (which is another one of my passions). It wasn't until I was in college that I dabbled in jewelry design. My roommate was a hugely talented artist, and she and I used to take trips downtown (Boston) to a bead store on the weekends and then spend our afternoons making jewelry. It wasn't until after I graduated, and started making the crocheted pieces I make today, that I realized that I might have something here. I was working at a Marketing agency in Boston, and someone fell head over heels for a piece I wore into work, and bought it off my neck! I then started doing local craft fairs, which progressed to trunk shows, fashion shows, my website and now boutiques.
2. What is the inspiration behind your jewelry designs?
When I begin to make a new piece, I sit in my studio and look at all of my latest bead purchases. I will grab a strand of this, and a strand of that, and see how I would like them together. I try to choose color combinations that I don't normally see...when I have something that works, something just clicks, and I know I have the makings of a new creation. As far as color inspiration I get it from everywhere: fashion magazines, seasonal changes in nature, flowers, the beach and ocean, etc. I am not influenced by fashion trends at all, because I like to make my pieces timeless.
3. Are there any stores or boutiques in the DC area that sell J. Rae Jewelry? If not, are there plans for that?
Not as of yet, but I would love to be in a boutique in the DC area.
4. What type of woman do you design for? What is her style like?
I design for women like myself: strong, intelligent, out-going, open-minded. As far as my style, and those that I design for, I would say it is classic with a twist of modern. I love a crisp fitted blouse with a modern twist (a plunging neckline, or a sash waist), a great pair of trouser jeans, and some killer heels....a outfit that doesn't take away from the fabulous necklace around my neck of course!
5. Do you do custom designs or commissioned pieces?
I would say about a quarter of my business comes from commissioned pieces. I have clients contact me and say "I have an event in 3 weeks and I need jewels to match my outfit!" all the time. I also do a lot of commissioned pieces for gifts as well. Some people don't want pieces that are as big and chunky as my usual designs, so I make them something similar that would have 3 strands as opposed to 8.
6. What's new for the fall?
Fall, my favorite season!! I like to bring back a lot of wood and metallics. I always do a lot of Turquoise, because it is so timeless. I also feature more graduated styles (multi-length) as opposed to the choker style. You can even layer my graduated pieces with your own long chain necklaces from last fall!

There are so many cultural events Washingtonians can partake in and best of all many of these events are free. For the past three years, I have been going to the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden with friends every Friday during the summer to listen to free Jazz music before going out on the town. A friend of mine called me for advice on what to wear for a girls night out. She is short and very tiny and sick of the not being able to wear the latest trends like the maxi dress. The shortsuit is an outfit a petite woman can pull off without looking trashy or too young. The first thought that came out of my mouth when I saw this Christian Dior Folie Strass Pumps was, "Holy s**t, I f*&^ing love you. F*&*" Seriously, Christian Dior, what are you doing to me? You keep designing these mouth watering shoes that I can't get enough of. What makes this shoe perfect? Let me count the ways.
1. It's yellow, the IT color of the spring and summer.
2. It's DRIPPING with bling, and I mean lots of it. The Swarovski studded heel could stop New York traffic.
3. The peep toe and cutouts on the heel make this shoe obscenly decadent and taboo all at once. I would never take them off. I would even run the Boston marathon in these. Actually no, there is no way I would deface glorious heels like these.

I have a confession to make, I am a huge Gossip Girl fan. I tune in every week just for the juicy story lines and the amazing fashion on the show. Two Southern belles, Emmie and Reagan, with a love of everything Southern and dressing their beaus in the right gear started a men's clothing company, Southern Proper, two years ago. Their mission was simple to make a clothing line for the Southern gentleman or the gentleman looking to get that Southern style. To date the belles have created a wonderful collection of long silk neckties and bow ties with fabulous prints that appeals the the Southern gent's proper lifestyle. 2. How did you two meet?
Emmie and I have been best friends for more than 8 years. We met during rush at Brenau Women's College in 1999, which was my freshman year and her junior year, and we ended up not only becoming sorority sisters, but also Big Sis/Little Sis. I think what sealed the deal for our friendship was the fact that we both loved a man in a seersucker suit and a bowtie! Little did we know that this bond would lead us to start a men's clothing label. Although Emmie graduated from Brenau in 2001, I ended up transferring to the University of North Carolina which is where I graduated from in 2004. Despite the distance, we remained close friends and Emmie even helped me land my first job out of college!
3. Why did you decide to start Southern Proper?
In 2005, Emmie and I were both working for Goody Products, a division of Newell Rubbermaid. Emmie worked in product development/marketing while I worked in marketing communications/corporate sponsorships. We were both bored with corporate America and realized we needed a change of pace and something that would challenge us. Because we have always loved two things: southern men and fashion, Emmie approached me and suggested we start our own preppy men's line. Over tater tots and greasy cheeseburgers, the concept of Southern Proper was born. We left our jobs in August 2005 and launched Southern Proper into stores in March 2006.
4. Who is the Southern Proper Gentleman? What is his style? What is his drink?
The Southern Proper Gentleman is a middle to upper income 14-75 year Southern Gentleman with a classic fashion style and a deep appreciation for Southern heritage and etiquette. He is refined, social, and a bit old fashioned. He adores the belles/ladies in his life and always remembers the motto of "Look your best, but more importantly, hang your arm on someone who looks her best too!"He is always well-dressed. He wears crisp, cuffed khakis, bit loafers, starched dress shirts and a well worn blazer. (He can also substitute redwings or boat shoes when needed.) He drives a Tahoe, Suburban or Z-71 pick up truck. He enjoys the great outdoors and respects nature and all its beauty.
5. How can gents capture a bit of the Southern Proper lifestyle?

6. I love all many of the designs how do you come decide which ones to use? Who designs them?
All of our designs are southern-inspired and truly reflect our life of growing up in the South. We keep a list of "all things southern" and try to incorporate them into our collections season by season. We have truly been blessed to have an amazing designer, Joni Harrison, who is a true Southern belle in every sense of the word. A native of South Georiga, Joni really connects with our brand and is also a dear friend of ours. Without her creativity and vision, Southern Proper would not be what it is.
7. What's in the future for the Belle's line?
We have been amazed by all the "belles" who have fallen in love with our line and have encouraged us to expand our women's offerings. Next spring we will be launching our "Proper Polos" for women and we may also have a couple more things up our sleeve!
8. Will you be offering online shopping soon?
Right now, we don't have any plans to offer online sales through our website in the near future. We feel that it is important to build our brand with our retailers who have been with us from the beginning and who have become our biggest cheerleaders. They share in our passion for men's clothing and we want to continue to grow their business as well. Unlike online shopping, our retailers can truly share our story with their customers and offer them an experience.
9. Are there any stores in the DC area that carry Southern Proper? Are there plans of bringing it up here?
We are looking to expand into the DC area and would love to have a presence there! There are so many folks who work on the Hill who love our line so there is definitely a demand for it. Our closest store is just outside DC located in Kensington, MD called The Fine Swine.

Never overdone and highly sophisticated, the Oscar de la Renta 2009 Resort Collection was pure elegance. The designer unveiled an amazing collection of lace and silk dresses that are sure to appease all his fans. Traditional resort colors of corals, blues, pinks, yellows, emeralds and corals graced the runways. What I loved most about the collection was his unexpected mix of equestrian hats with a couple of the looks. Ivory silk high waisted pants made me want to sail away on a Caribbean cruise. The climax of the runway show was de la Renta's exhibition of voluminous gowns so grandiose that models were swimming in tulle and organza. High fashion, high drama and nothing less than perfection, de la Renta outdid himself with his 2009 Resort collection. 
Congratulations to Whitney for winning America's Next Top Model. She is the first plus size model to win the ANTM challenge. Body image in this country is so distorted that girls and guys think a size above 4 is fat. GASP! I hope Whitney's win is a step in the right direction to teach women that they can be beautiful regardless of their size. 
Whether you are on Team Jolie or Team Aniston I think you can concur when I say that Angelina Jolie is one hard working mama. Jolie, who is expecting her second biological child with Brad Pitt, has been busy working on film projects, being a mom and an ambassador for children. Nina Garcia has finally accepted a position at Marie Claire after weeks of speculation about her departure from Elle Magazine as the fashion director, a position she's held for 13 years. Her move though a little bittersweet, will be put off until the fall in order for her to complete one more season of Project Runway, an Elle magazine partnered show.
Until her move in the fall, Garcia will become the editor-at-large for Elle rather than stay on as the magazine's fashion director. I wonder if the move to Marie Claire has anything to do with Project Runway's move from Bravo to Lifetime...

It's official. The Sex and the City mania has officially begun. The SATC mania began for me two years ago when the ladies announced that they had reached a deal to start filming the movie. The four gorgeous ladies of my all time favorite show made an appearance in London today for the world premiere of the Sex and the City movie. All four women looked so fab in their stunning dresses. Cynthia Nixon stole the show with her deep plunge black pleated gown. As always Kristin Davis took the conservative route but still looked fab in her red dress. Kim Catrall's off the shoulder cocktail length red dress was befitting. Sarah Jessica Parker took the award for the most creative by wearing an acorn headpiece with butterflies and florals growing from it. I loved her dress but think she could have gone without the headdress. But then again, this is Carrie Bradshaw we are talking about.

Versace's spring accessories collection is in my top five for the season. The look of Versace is about vibrant hues of deep lapis, St. Tropez turquoise, vine ripened citrus oranges and jewel toned neutrals. What I love most about the collection are the textures of the accessories. From floral topped and cutout peep toe heels to textured croc clutches and handbags, the collection was all about drama and elegance. Here are some of my favorite looks from the spring collection.
The shoes on the left are by far one of my favorites this season. The lapis blue is such a statement color. I love the floral detail on top of the t-strap sandal heels.

There is always something for everybody at TGD. Snaps to Paris Hilton for capturing the look of the day award. The heiress looks well put together and very sophisticated this week on the David Letterman Show. She went back for more grilling and held her composure after her tough interrogation and near breakdown on the Letterman Show last October. The socialite was promoting her new hair extension line, doggy clothing line and her new Proseco in a can, yes yes champagne in a can - already had something similar last week at Gold Cup. Paris' champagne is not yet available in the United States but it's all the rage in Germany. It's good to be Paris.

1. I love the doctor bags by Paolo, how did the idea come about to start a line just for women?
I have been in the design and manufacturing end of fine leather carrying cases for over 20 years, I am always looking for new challenges and inspiration. Women's fashion is always changing, but some styles like the "Doctor Bag", for example are timeless, but we can always find new leather colors and textures to keep it fresh.
2. Aside from the Doctor Bag, what other styles do you carry?
Currently, in the Paolo Line we offer our Derby Style handbag, in addition to beautiful laptop folios, and 2 sizes of travel accessory cases. We also have an additional new handbag design that will be launched this upcoming Fall 2008.
3. So many colors to choose from, which colors are your favorites for spring?

6. I noticed that you can design your own doctor bag? how long is the process and what would readers have to do to get one custom made?
We can generally ship a custom made personalized bag within 2 weeks, but customers with time sensitive issues for gifts receive FANTASTIC service to accommodate their needs. We love and welcome special requests, it is our forte.
7. What is the difference between the vintage bag and the regular doctor bag?
Regular doctor bags are slightly more rigid and can get significantly larger in size. The handles are small and arched, and the leathers that are used are much different. The colors offered in traditional doctor bags tend to be quite a bit more conservative and masculine.
8. Any tips for keeping these fab handbags in tip top shape?
These bags are all high quality top grain leather with many different colors and textures. I like to use leather upholstery wipes for convenience, it feeds the leather to keep the bags looking great. All of the handbags also have luggage bumpers to protect the bottom of the bags.
Since my injury, a lot of people have been asking me how I manage to go out on the town in a cast. Having a broken leg does not mean I am incapable of having fun. I still manage to murder the dance floor better than most girls even with one leg and still look chic. Here is my inspiration while in my air cast aka boot. Style maven Rihanna injured her ankle during a concert a month ago but that didn't stop her from rocking her Christian Louboutin pumps and her boot. Ladies, don't let anyone prevent you from looking your very best.

One of my must haves each summer for the past two years has been a T-bags dress and this year is no exception. The lovely print cotton dresses are so comfy and versatile. Although the print dress can be dressy, I like the black for the many evening summer soirees I will be attending.

Proceeds from the Trey Lefler Memorial Golf Classic Kick-Off Party and Golf Classic will benefit the Trey Lefler Scholarship Fund, to fund scholarships for college bound students at University of the South (Sawanee).
Jack Heatherly Lefler, III, known to friends simply as Trey, a native of Loudon, Tennessee and an active member in the Washington, DC community lost his life in a tragic car accident on November 22, 2007 at the age of 25. While in Washington, Trey served as a board member of the Capital Club of Washington, DC, a mentor in the “Everybody Wins” reading program, and a founding member of the Capitol Entertainment Group.
To celebrate his life and legacy, the Capital Club will be hosting the First Annual Trey Lefler Memorial Golf Classic, a members only golf tournament being held on Saturday, June 14. I have been waiting for a Sex and the City movie since the show's finale. Sex and The City got me through lonely weekends in college when all the students who lived in the area would go home for the weekend. The DVDs kept me company all weekend long until a new episode aired on a Sunday night. My favorite fashionistas are back with a vengeance and I can't wait for Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda to get their happy endings. I hear Charlotte gets pregnant in the movie. The closest I have come to golf is running the Battle of the Hill Golf Tournaments and attending a few PGA tournaments to catch a glimpse of Tiger Woods. I have wished for a day when I would have just one bra that allowed me to wear any type of outfit I wished. I guess today is the day. Victoria has a new secret and it's one that I want to spill to everyone woman out there. Do not let fashion restrictions prevent you from looking your chicest. I am not sure why schools insist on wearing white but I remember I had to wear white for my graduation as well. The first thing you must remember is that you have to be comfortable in what you wear because it will be photographed by everyone and plastered all over Facebook for the world to see. Looking for a bit of that je ne sais quoi style of the Parisian woman, then invest in one of Lamarthe's chic leather handbags. My cousin gave me the Lamarthe Opium Sauvage as my birthday present and so I had to research the brand. Aside from the Opium Sauvage, this is my other favorite bag from the new collection. You don't have to stick with skinny jeans if it does not fit your body. A lot of designers have created colored denim in various cuts for different body types. Remember you don't have to try to be too matchy.

Yigal Azrouel is taking fashion to new heights with his simple elegant collections. The Israeli-born designer creates timeless pieces that New York socialites cannot get enough of. From form fitting tube skirts and flowy maxi dresses to brightly colored culottes and high waisted pants, Azrouel's designs never disappoint. Azrouel is the youngest of eight children, with five older sisters. This is apparent in the elegant designs he produces season after season. There is no need to be dressed in a suit or blazer on a casual Saturday afternoon outing with the boys. You can dress low key and still grab the attention of the ladies. Here is a great look for the everyday guy. Instead of wearing jeans, opt for chinos, which can take you from an afternoon with the boys to a low key night on the waterfront. This season is all about color and there is no need for guys to opt out of the trend. Add some panache to neutral chinos and a t-shirt by wearing bright color like this cobalt blue cardigan. What trends are hot for spring/summer?
1) Tropical colors are super hot: oranges, blues, and bold pinks are flying off of our shelves. We can hardly keep Rebecca Minkoff's tangerine colored bags in stock and Foley + Corinna's
fuchsia and electric sea colors have been super popular as well.
2) Patent leather -- still hot! We love the way Botkier's patent bags (especially the Marine colored mini Sasha ) and Badgley Mischka Platinum and Cynthia Rowley also brought us extensive patent collections this season.
3) Modern neutrals. This season, lots of designers came out with neutrals that are much more interesting than classic tan or white…. we love the shimmery champagne and mocha leathers from Treesje, and new colors called dusty and stone from Rebecca Minkoff.
The good news is that handbags and accessories are such an easy way to work color into an outfit! Colored bags are often more versatile than brown or black -- it's just a matter of breaking out of the black bag rut. Look for a color that works with blacks and browns, and one that you don't wear on your body too often. That way, you can wear it with lots of outfits without worrying about your bag being too close in shade to your outfit. A colored bag is also a great way to incorporate a color that is trendy but hard to wear -- for this season, it would be yellow -- tough to wear near your skin, perfect for a bag.
What is the one thing we can do to protect our handbags?
Condition them before using them; this will help to seal the pores of the bag and make it more dirt-resistant. Always use high quality products, and always spot test on the bottom of the bag and let it sit for 24 hours -- just to be sure that it won't change your bag when you treat the whole thing! This helps, and be careful about wearing newer jeans, especially dark ones, with light colored bags that may hit the jeans -- denim dye transfers onto bags very easily! For patent leather bags, you should always store them in their dustbag or a pillowcase, as patent can pick up other colors if it's stored right next to another leather bag or colored textile.
