On my wishlist for the fall is this gorgeous rich green tote from J. Crew. The Tumbled-Leather Quincy tote is absolutely perfect for falls deep jewel toned and monochromatic looks. The J. Crew tote is very versatile.

"Oversized quilted bags in luxurious leathers and rich jewel tones are a must-have for the fall," says Rachel Fulcher, a personal shopper at J.Crew in Pentagon City.

Rachel suggests women pair these oversized quilted bags with neutral colored dresses in fall colors like grey, brown and even cream. The term less is more is no longer applicable when it comes to handbags.

The J. Crew Tumbled-leather Quincy Tote is available online and at J. Crew stores for $278 and is available in Black and Vine Green.

I saw a commercial on AMC this morning for Mad Men, a show about the advertising in industry in the '60s. The show has already received 16 Emmy nominations this year and I wonder why? All the characters on the show are well dressed men. The show takes us back to an era when appearance was number one; when a majority of men took pride in wearing a well tailored suit or casualware. The '60s were elegant times and men who watch the show realize this. Slim-cut suits were in.

Mad Men, which returns to AMC this Sunday for its second season, is set in
the sleek world of advertising in 1960s New York. Where offices such as Sterling
Cooper have no need for such quaint modern-day notions as political correctness
or casual Friday. Where no man is complete without the morning paper, his tie
and a post-lunch Scotch. [Valet]

Join the boys club and watch this show for some inspiration in how to create a classic wardrobe.

Shoe designer Lacey Kirstein is one cool chica. Lacey started her company LaceyK shoes because she was tired of never finding the right shoes for narrow feet. Sometimes only a woman knows what a woman wants and Lacey K definitely knows what shoes will make women happy. I bought one of Lacey's shoes last year and can't get enough of it. The shoes are so comfortable and just plain gorgeous. What I love about LaceyK shoes is that every single item in the collection is classic and timeless.

When I found out that Lacey lived in the DC area, I had to interview her and find out more about what made her start making her own shoes. We have mutual friends so it was not hard to get in contact with her. This jet setter took the time to answer my questions about shoes, starting a business and what goes into a successful shoe brand. To date, LaceyK shoes have been heralded by some of the leading fashion magazines as one of the best and most comfortable shoes. I just wish I had Donald Trump's budget so that I could get every single one of the shoes in her collection.

What inspired you to choose fashion as your career path?
Prior to the launch of LaceyK Shoes, I had been in voice & data B2B sales for 12 years. But throughout my entire life I had a narrow foot and have always found shoe shopping to be an incredibly frustrating experience! I tried exhaustively to find chic & stylish narrow shoes that rarely, if ever existed! At times, I had even resorted to gluing thick pads into my shoes as all the department stores would suggest. Only a small handful of designers and manufacturers make narrow width shoes and I hated the very limited conservative-styles and selection they were providing for me in black, black or black. So I decided I couldn’t be the only woman with this dilemma….and the market research showed I absolutely was not. I also spent years drawing as a child so it comes very easily to me to sketch out 4-5 new styles at a time. (The day I drove away from the art store after purchasing my first sketch pads, pencils, charcoals & erasers to begin my very first designs to send to Italy, I felt the most incredible goose bumps and had tears of joy in my eyes! I could not believe I was actually getting ready to design my very own collection of shoes I’d always hoped & dreamed of…it was a magical day and quite empowering.)

Why did you choose to start designing shoes? I felt terribly neglected as a consumer. Continuously I saw millions of fabulous shoes I couldn’t wear that women with medium widths had to choose from (Jimmy Choo’s, Manolo Blahnik’s, Christian Louboutin, Giuseppe Snotty, etc, etc… I could go on & on…) I found a mint green cocktail dress on a birthday trip to Paris which was designed by an up & coming French designer on the Champs Ellysees but I could not find one pair of shoes to wear with the dress. At some point in my shoe quest a light bulb went on! I realized I couldn’t be the only women in the world with narrow feet with this problem, so I would design my own stylish shoes. I just HAD to throw my hat in the ring and selfishly empower all the women with narrow feet who are grossly underserved, with far better choices & a wider selection of narrow shoes. We’re still working feverishly to build out the collections today and offer far more choices and various silhouettes.

How did you get started?
For months & months I was looking for the ideal factory in Italy to attach my name & my brand. I talked with boutiques & associations and attended shoe shows. I had almost moved forward with one factory when at the very last hour, a chance meeting with total strangers pointed me in a completely different but phenomenal direction! Now the factory we use produces 80% of all of Gucci’s sandals, which is not bad company to be in.

Where do you look to for ideas and inspiration for your collections?
I pull various components and looks from shoes that won’t fit on my foot to build my dream shoes or I design those I want for various fashions that no other designer is making. Then I make my wish list of colors and materials I have never been able to find from any other designers in the world. (Much of my collection is in python & crocodile because I’ve never been able to find any narrows in either skin.) I also like a classic simplistic shoe with a fabulous dress or suit. Or a fabulously ornate shoe with simplistic fashion. So I’ve tried to provide both thus far.

What is the most important part of a successful collection?
I believe it’s essential to round out a collection with various heel heights, an assortment of colors in diverse materials but all in a shoe that fits well with standardized sizing (so a woman knows an 8½ LaceyK will always fit her foot fabulously).

What is your signature style?
I must say I personally prefer to err towards a more classic, simplistic yet elegant style.

What is the one shoe a Glamour Girl MUST absolutely has in her shoe closet?
I would say that would have to be the “Florence” which was featured in InStyle Magazine! Florence is one of the most fabulous cities in all the world and the editors picked out the “Florence” at my first shoe show just 5 days after my very first prototypes entered the US from Italy! It’s a strappy, sexy python sandal with a 3 inch heel featuring an ankle strap and chunky Swarovski® crystals across the toes.” Magnifico!” as our friends in Firenze would say!

How do your designs fit in to the DC glam girl lifestyle?
LaceyK’s can be seen everywhere from Am Law 200 law firms to swanky cocktail parties & posh nightclubs.

What is your favorite piece in the collection?
My personal favourites are the “Florence” & the “New York”. The NY is a classic T-strap that can be dressed up or down but also elongates the leg. It features a Swarovski® crystal buckle on the side of the ankle and Glamazon gals can find it in black calfskin at Sassanova in Georgetown or on the website www.laceyKshoes.com in a gorgeous light green crocodile.

Best Shoe tip?
I’m used to getting creative with my shoes, both before and after I started my company but I’m all about hammering another hole in the leather strap to make medium widths tighter or in others cases, looser. In terms of care, there are a few python, croc & leather products we endorse and plan to offer on our website soon.

Issa has always been known for beautiful prints and delicate fabrics. Check out this slinky mini kimono style dress with a plunging neckline. The party perfect look is great accentuating long legs. To avoid looking like too overdone and inappropriate, make sure that the dress hits mid-thigh and that nothing is showing. Compliment the Issa Mini Kimono dress, $595 with gold accessories and shoes or the black strappy heels and a black clutch.

With the dog days of summer upon us, all we can seem to think about is the cooler weather and college football season, but we are not there yet. We still have two months of hot and balmy weather with numerous cocktail parties and functions to attend. Luckily for us gents, we can dig deep into the closet, press or in extreme cases, the hamper, and create a unique look out of rather pedestrian garments.

When it comes to fashion and men, Washington, DC, Georgetown in particular, is behind the curve, a curve behind which I plan on staying for eternity. It has taken me some time to realize the true meaning of the word sartorial—it can summed up as any garment that was in style fifty years ago, is in style today and will be in style fifty years from now. My father has dressed the same for the better part of 40 years, and I used to look at his perpetual prep school style of khakis, button down shirt, blue blazer and Gucci’s as dated, but have since realized that look is timeless, and when subtly tweaked goes from ordinary to extraordinary. Here are some sartorial ideas on how to ramp up your current wardrobe and create a look unique to you for the rest of the summer.

First and foremost, remember that the biggest complement that you can receive is when someone tells you that you look good—this means that no one part of your look stands out and that everything is balanced. Understanding that balance is what we require, we will start from the ground up.

Shoes are one of the most important elements of any gentleman’s wardrobe. For most summer cocktail events, a slip-on loafer worn sans socks is a must—preferably one with a thin leather sole. Black or brown, the color is not the important part, nor is the maker, but rather that they have been freshly conditioned. Make sure before you attend a party to clean your shoes and darken the heels and edge of the soles to give them that crisp and clean look. Boating shoes are, well, for boating, so unless you planning on being top side, leave them at home.

Trousers are where most people tend to go a little overboard, a-la critter pants. The goal of dressing well is not to appear as if you just fell out of a shop window on Wisconsin Ave. If you choose pastel colored trousers, madras or critter pants, realize that you will need to balance out the rest of the look, so your belt with the names of the beaches that are now sandwiches, might be a bit too much—stick with a simple leather belt that matches your shoes. Also, wearing said “loud” pants means that you have limited shirting options. Seersucker, light colored linen or silk trousers as well as khakis can accept a more whimsical belt and will allow you to have more shirting and jacket choices. Your trousers always need to be properly tailored and freshly laundered, wrinkle free with a crisp crease.

So if you have chosen the route of the “loud” pants, make sure you balance it out with a more subtle shirt. For pastel colored trousers, the standard white and blue dress shirt will work, but you can also mix in a gingham check or narrow stripe shirt. Try to avoid contrasting pastels—pink pants with a lime green shirt and you will look like an Easter egg. Madras and critter pants are best worn with a simple solid polo or long sleeve shirt. Going light on the trousers (i.e. khakis, seersucker, linen or silk) allows you to go with pastel, checked, striped (except with seersucker) or patterned shirts. Pink and other soft pastels are always go-to colors that add a lot to a somewhat dull outfit. If you are wearing a belt that is pastel or patterned, make sure that it plays off the colors in the shirt and makes a transition into the trousers. It’s also fine to wear a plain leather belt.

One word—blazer. It will go with anything and looks great. If the party is indoors then I would recommend wearing one, but the key to accent it correctly with a pocket square. Now most people do not have an arsenal of squares, but thinking that less is more, a simple white linen pocket square will set off your blazer and complete the look—just make sure that your square is peaked in the pocket.

Oh, and the last thing, not to sound cliché, but wear your clothing with confidence, as the clothes do not make the man, but they sure make the man look better—especially in the eyes of a young lass. Remember, if it looks like you are trying too hard, chances are, you are, so keep it simple. Happy hunting gentlemen…

Hot off the press...Project Runway winner Christian Siriano's exclusive collection for Bluefly.com is now available for purchase online. The collection of sexy and fun tshirts and metallic dresses, jackets and skirts are somewhat affordable yet stay true to Siriano's unique style. He takes an ordinary jersey tshirt (grey jersey 'Transylvania' crewneck t-shirt) and transforms it into a dressy top that can be worn with a dark denim or an evening skirt. Siriano's collection is youthful and sophisticated. Puffy sleeved jackets, dresses are so girly in shiny fabrics are synonymous with Siriano. I just wish he had a bigger collection but beggars can't be choosers. For the moment, you get 20 percent off of the Christian Siriano collection for Bluefly.com.

Singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse, known for her trailer park looking hair and drug habit, is the latest inspiration for Guess? The Guess? label chose model Nicole Trunfio to "mimics the singer's iconic thick black eyeliner and infamous beehive, adding a little rock and roll to their pinup image," said a rep for Trunfio. Ugh! Has fashion really sunk this low. Let's put drug-out singers on a pedestal of fashion shall we?

For many children in developing countries, universal education and the simple opportunities afforded to children in Western countries is a challenge. Many of these children find themselves without an education because they cannot afford to purchase school uniforms, shoes, books, pencils or even hygiene products. The economic disparity in most developing countries is so dire.

There are many foundations and organizations willing to provide basic and essential supplies to ensure that children in Africa, South America and Asia are able to get a primary education. One of the organizations making it possible for a child to put his or her best foot forward is TOMS, a shoe company founded by Blake Mycoskie with a simple concept: for every pair of shoes purchased, one pair is donated to a child in a developing country. Since it's inception in May 2006 TOMS shoes has given over 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in Argentina and 100,000 shoes to children in South Africa, proving that changing a child's life begins with a single step.

Blake Mycoskie was in town last week visiting with First Lady Laura Bush and took the time out of his schedule to premier his new documentary "For Tomorrow" at the City Tavern Club. The event, hosted by DC's own Katherine Kennedy and friends, included a showing of Mycoskie's documentary as well as a celebrity shoe auction. I was not able to attend the event but my good friend Sasha Horne-Skrine took the time to write me a note to tell me that the TOMS event was very moving and educational. Read her account of the night below.

"I attended a reception featuring Blake Mycoskie, Amazing Race star and founder of TOMS, last week in Georgetown. With TOMS, Blake took a concept that seems relatively simple - for every pair of shoes sold, a pair is donated to a child in a country such as Argentina, China, or Ethiopia that doesn’t have shoes. The event hosted by Kathrine Kennedy, Bisnow, Surreal Vodka, and Casa Noble Tequila hosting was held at the the City Tavern Club in Georgetown.

"For Tomorrow," is a documentary that captures the process and sheer dedication of Blake and his colleagues as they visited multiple villages in Argentina delivering 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in need. Perhaps the most emotional part of the film (and there were many) was when Blake’s long time colleague, an Argentina native, broke into tears as a local villager described how providing the shoes to the children truly changed their lives. The villager also said that having shoes for children also provides them with many opportunities such as the ability to walk through the jungle to attend school."

If you would like to take part in one of the trips to deliver shoes (they are called Shoe Drops) visit http://friendsoftoms.com/. You can also make a difference by purchasing a pair of TOMS to be donated. Help children in developing countries put their best foot forward to a brighter future.

I was informed about this opportunity by one of the casting recruiters from GotCast. Most of the people in the running have had months to get votes. In just a week, I have jumped to #62. HELP me get Anna Wintour's job (Vogue editor who's been there for ages) If you saw The Devil Wears Prada, she is allegedly the inspiration behind Miranda's character!

Style Network is conducting a nationwide casting search for three ambitious, charismatic and driven individuals who think they have what it takes to work in the exhilarating and high-stakes world of a top fashion magazine!

Feel free to leave a message on my wall.

This year's historic election is going to be one any of us will never forget. To get ready for battle, Republicans and Democrats have been mudslinging each other in the media and on the streets.  Whether you are for Team Obama or Team McCain, you must always look your best when representing your candidate.  The battle this fall will not be at the ballot polls, it will be in the streets.  Who is the most fashionable, Democrats or Republicans? Stubbs & Wooten is trying to settle the score with these two loafers, Republican Black and Democrat Black loafers. Each loafer has the Thomas Nast cartoon  for each party. Both the elephant and the donkey on the loafer are embroidered in gold metallic thread on the classic Stubbs & Wooten black velvet slipper, $395.  Perfect with slacks, a crisp button down shirt and a blazer, the Stubbs & Wooten political party loafer is sure to be a hit among Washingtonians.

The rebel without a cause look is trendy for fall and one of the simplest ways to add the look to your wardrobe is with accessories.  Cuffs, chain necklaces, dog tag necklaces and leather goods with chain and metal details should be part of your repertoire for the grungy biker look. The rebel look can be as simple as dark denim jeans, zippered high heeled boots, a white tshirt and a leather jacket.  A simple accessory like Emporio Armani's Patent Multistrand Cuff with Snap Closure, $118, completes the grunge look while still maintaining an air of sophistication.

Wunderkind Christian Siriano took Project Runway by storm with his flamboyant personality and innovative designs.  Since winning Project Runway, the doors have finally opened for 22-year-old Siriano.  Celebrities, boutiques and television shows are vying for Christian Siriano's designs. Victoria Beckham wore a dress designed by Siriano on her show, he is designing a gown for Vanessa Williams' character on Ugly Betty and Cameron Diaz has told him personally that she is a fan.  Siriano's stock just keeps rising and rising.  He just signed a deal to design a collection exclusively for Bluefly.com and will be designing Uma Thurman's clothes for the upcoming movie Eloise in Paris.

Siriano wants to follow in the footsteps of fashion newcomers Rodarte and Proenza Schouler. Instead of selling his Project Runway finale collection, Siriano is waiting to create a dazzling and perfect collection.  Siriano has been touted as his generation's Marc Jacobs, a huge compliment that came from Tim Gunn, PR's host and chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne.

"In my 29 years of teaching young designers, I have never met a fashion prodigy - until Christian," says Tim Gunn about Siriano in an interview for Elle magazine.  "I believe that he is his generation's Marc Jacobs."

French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld looking chic and fabulous with Georgio Armani in her Azzadine Alaia lace-up gladiators in Paris. Her black and white combination is very Parisian and simply gorgeous. Armani received the Legion D'Honneur Award in Paris last week.

Still anxiously waiting for the Vogue Italia All-Black issue to hit the newstands in the States? Here is a sneak peak at some of the photos from the history issue. I am going to Barnes and Nobles in Georgetown today to see if it's available yet. Stay tuned.

"Most of my work is for American Vogue. I shoot for it almost every issue. This is a magazine that sells 1.2m copies and is probably read by 3m. Its reach is so wide you have to be quite easily understood. Whereas British Vogue's aesthetics are different. You can't give them work that's too bland. It's got to have a certain humour; a certain fun."

- Fashion photographer Mario Testino calls American Vogue 'bland' in his three-week long diary for London newspaper The Independent.

Susan Menkes of International Herald Tribune interviewed Alessandra Facchinetti, Valentino's new creative director on the her first couture show for the label.  Facchinetti brings a new perspective to Valentino with her romantic approach to designing womenswear. She talks about the significance of being one of the few women heading major fashion houses in the male dominated field.

"The metamorphosis of art and beauty is my passion. The discovery of contemporary mediums of expression has allowed me to pursue my interest in art, beauty, architecture and progressive cultural exchange. Dubai is a fashion bud on the verge of blossoming into the next fashion hub of the world. The city is alive with culture and rich in personality, making a perfect place for aesthetic, fashion and design to flourish."

- Karl Lagerfeld on designing residential interiors for residences on Dubai's "The World" project, a man-made archipelago that will form the pattern of the earth's continents as viewed from above.

Designer Roberto Cavalli announced today that he will not be selling his namesake label due to bad market conditions.  In an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore, an Italian financial paper, Cavalli said that the worth of his company based on current earnings multiples were short of his goals for the year. The designer said the possibility of a sale of the label will not be an option before 2009.

“The timing is not ripe yet for such a step. What’s more, as I have already said a thousand times, we don’t need [to sell],” Cavalli said in the Il Sole interview.

Merrill Lynch, which was advising on the sale, valued the company at 1.4 billion euros, or $2.19 billion at current exchange — almost 17 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of around 84 million euros, or $115 million at average exchange, in 2007.

Luxury and fashion companies listed in Europe are trading on average on an EV/EBITDA multiple of 8.9.
“A year ago, [the banks] spoke to me about certain numbers, which today have vanished with the stock market crisis,” Cavalli told Il Sole. “I’m not selling for 800-900 million [euros].”

Candover, Carlyle, Doughty Hanson, Lion Capital, and Texas Pacific were some of the private equity funds that were expected to bid in the auction for the Roberto Cavalli label next week. [WWD]

Oscar de la Renta knows how to create beautiful silhouettes for the sophisticate.  For fall '08, the designer's retro inspired dresses will be imitated but never duplicated. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail on this malachite Bow Dress by Oscar de la Renta is fit for a princess or a lady. The flounce skirt has a '50s vibe but is updated with silk bow trim detail at the hemline.  The cut of the dress is very forgiving and flatters any body. The bateau neck is very ladylike and will compliment a Chanel necklace or pearl necklace and earrings set. The purple is a little bit more grown up and sophisticated but trendy at the same time. This dress is timeless and will be in style for decades. The bow dress is definitely an investment piece at $2,990. Any de la Renta fan should have this in her closet for fall.

Cesare Paciotti Brocade Boots

Cesare Paciotti's shoe collections are always fashion forward and trendsetting. The designer transferred spring's color trend for into fall '08 with brocade boots in vibrant pink.  These Cesare Paciotti brocade boots have a regal vibe.  If the Tudor's lived today, Anne Boleyn would be wearing these boots with a little black dress and opaque tights. Instead of adhering to the fall's monochromatic look, add a splash of color to an LBD, brown or grey dress with these brocade boots.  The brocade boot by Cesare Paciotti, $850, are available at the Cesare Paciotti Boutique in New York City.

Elie Saab knows a woman's body is a work of art. His couture collection for Paris this year was an ode to Renaissance art. Saab drew inspiration from Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel with flowing gowns of taffeta and Georgette that were so delicate and feminine. Saab's mastery of the perfect evening gown was evident in his 50 plus collection of voluminous gowns in lace and chiffon, off-the-shoulder bows and long trains fit for a queen. The color palette for his collection was borrowed from Renaissance art including browns, blues and cerulean. Each gown was cut and designed to perfection and fit for a princess. Orange and black combination is one of the big trends for fall 08. Designers took orange to a whole new level by making it the dominant color on the runways. Orange and black are no longer just for Halloween.

Christian Lacroix, Commes des Garcons and Narcisco Rodriguez said goodbye to the little black dress and sent models out in orange dresses with black accents. Orange came in volumes at the Commes des Garcons runway where voluminous skirts and tops were the top trends. Moschino Cheap & Chip created its own version of the Halloween look with an orange coat with black accents.

Alessandro Dell' Acqua and Prada added hints of orange to black. Prada's lace dress with an orange accented turtleneck was romantic and chic. Dell' Acqua paired the little black dress with orange opaque tights and tan shoes. The orange and black trend is all treats and no tricks.

"Vogue is not politically correct. the magazine loves fur, all. And it celebrates a slender physique. Sure, in its annual shape issue it applauds curves. Vogue has championed fashion industry initiatives to combat eating disorders among models. But vogue will never endorse fat; it won't even pretend to."

The Washington Post's Robin Givhan, reflecting on Anna Wintour's 20-year reign at Vogue.

Anyone missing a 3.02 carat diamond solitaire ring?!

A few days ago a couple walked into the Mervis Diamond Boutique with a 3.02 solitaire diamond ring with the imprint "Mervis" on the metal that they found in the Tyson's parking garage. The good Samaritans are looking to return the ring to the rightful owner. The ring is reportedly 3.02 carats, H color, and SI1 clarity and an excellent ideal cut.

Zed Mervis estimates that the ring and diamond together are worth over $50,000!!!The couple and the wonderful people of Mervis Diamond , are trying to track down the customer who is missing their precious stone. They have determined that the ring was sold over three years ago (the company only imprinted the name Mervis on their rings for a couple of years).

Any help or information, please email Katherine Kennedy at kennedy@kmkpr.com or Contact Mervis Diamond Importers 1900 Mervis Way, Tysons Corner, VA 22182 Phone: (703) 448-9000

Any and all claims will be checked against the master list of sales, so don't be sneaky ;-)Photos to come soon. [KKinDC]

God Bless America! As we head into the weekend of festivities, we can't forget why Uncle Sam has given us July 4th off. Sure it's a day to hang out with family and friends over apple pie and barbeque or having a boozefest on the water. It is also a day to remember that this country would not be what it is today without the sacrifices people made to get this country free of British rule. Had we not separated from the British, we would be ruled by a queen today. Hmm...that might not be so bad eh?

Anyhow, it is your patriotic duty to look good on July Fourth. You must support the red, white and blue and what it stands for by looking your absolute best. I put together a really simple All-American inspired outfit to give you inspiration for your own Independence Day festivities. Shabby Apple has a line of clothes so sophisticated and chic you would think they cost a fortune. No my friend, that is not the American way.

Cobblestones streets make me hate wearing heels. I can't tell you how many times my heels have been stuck in between nooks of cobblestones on the Georgetown sidewalks and I can't tell you how much I have spent on scrapped and broken heels. These factors do not stop me from wearing my finest heels down to the bar or restaurants to fist pump to Chris Brown.

Max Studio's Savanna heels are perfect for the hot summer nights on the town. I see salsa dancing in your future, especially in these heels. The cutout toe is party ready with a perfectly tied bow atop the toe. Do your patriotic duty and wear these shoes to your July 4 party. The shoes are available online or at Max Studio for $129.
